FAQ’s
-
Art licensing means granting a company the right to print an artist’s design onto their products for a pre-determined length of time, in exchange for a royalty fee or a flat fee. A licensing agreement is negotiated and signed between both parties to ensure the details are clear.
The copyright remains with the artist.
-
Usually a 1 year, 2 year or a 3 year timeframe.
-
Non Exclusive License:
This is where the purchaser may print the rented design onto their product for a set term. However, it also allows the artist to license the design to other companies, in the same or different product categories and region. The artist is also able to sell the design on print-on-demand sites. The copyright remains with the designer/artist.
Exclusive License:
An exclusive license allows one purchaser the sole right to use a pattern for a set amount of time for an agreed product type and region. The artist may still license the design in different non-competing categories. Usage terms are agreed upon before commencing of the license. The artist retains the copyright.
